Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Paul Gascoigne – Choices in life

I feel extremely sorry for Gazza's family rather than him. Yes, he has problems, but he has the money and support to have sought professional help. I was recently diagnosed with bipolar – after spending ten years suffering from it, as well as a developing alcohol problem from “self medication” – ignored by my own GP and the local mental health team, I had to pay for private treatment myself. I could spend my time feeling angry and sorry for myself, but like Gazza, have a partner and children to think about. His self-indulgent and self-pitying attitude is something that only he can choose to feel. He is lucky enough to be ABLE to pay for private psychiatric treatment, and/or detox, unlike many of the mentally ill people in this country. I was refused help from my GP despite begging for it, because I managed to hold down a job and care for my children, as many people do DESPITE having mental health or addiction problems, I wasn't seen as being “mentally ill”. I fail to see why Gazza should get sympathy for the choices he has made NOT to seek or follow advice, and put himself and his family through hell.
